MIAMs

The first step in mediation is an initial individual appointment known as a MIAM (Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting). During this meeting the mediator will ask you to explain your situation, your priorities and the issues which need to be decided.

What to Expect During Your MIAM

Information

The mediator will provide information regarding the mediation process (including costs and timescales) together with alternative options for you to consider. The mediator will ask for background information about your family and explore the issues you wish to discuss in mediation.

Confidentiality

You and your ex-partner will attend separate MIAMs. Rest assured that discussions during the MIAM are private and confidential subject to rare exceptions if a mediator has concerns regarding safeguarding (risk of harm to yourself or others) or criminal conduct.

Assessment

The safety of clients is paramount, mediators therefore need to assess the suitability of mediation and determine the appropriate format of mediation (including considering the option of mediation in separate spaces).

Choice

Mediation is voluntary. If you wish to proceed with mediation we will discuss the next steps. If you do not wish to mediate, (or if the mediator decides that mediation is unsuitable) we can provide you with evidence of your MIAM attendance should you wish to make a Court application.

Child Focus

We will discuss how we can support you in taking decisions regarding the arrangements for your children and provide details regarding the option of Child Inclusive Mediation. We start from understanding your children's needs and your wishes for their future.

Costs

The MIAM fee is £120 for a face to face session or £100 for a MIAM via Zoom video call. An additional £30 fee is charged if you require a Court form after your MIAM. We do not offer Legal Aid for Mediation but can help you to assess if you may be eligible to apply.

Online or Face to Face

Your MIAM can take place either face to face or online via Zoom video call. We are based in Leamington Spa but can arrange appointments at alternative locations.
